Eat your heart out, hipster

Flowmotion is a jam band. That’s right, hipster. A jamband. They’re a jamband that has, since its inception, hosted Summer Meltdown, a music festival near the band’s hometown, Seattle, which draws crowds 4000 strong. They’re also a jamband that has shared stages with acts as diverse as G Love & Special Sauce, Widespread Panic and Spearhead. And with a world beat infused rock sound that relies on frontman Josh Clauson’s melodic, high-energy vocals to flesh out the set, Flowmotion is a jamband that has been pleasing crowds up and down the West Coast, at over 200 shows a year, since their formation in 2001.

Flowmotion might lack the variation and sophistication that makes you want to play an album over and over again, but energy trumps sophistication at a live show, and Flowmotion’s got energy in droves. And, like any good jamband, Flowmotion is all about live performance. Take the dueling guitars of Clauson and RL Heyer and hang them on the strong backbone of the band’s driving percussion and bass, and you get just what you’d expect: Some downright booty-shakable tunes.

But be warned: if you’ve seen Flowmotion before, don’t expect the same set you saw last time. With the addition of RL Heyer, the band has added a heavy rock sound to its quiver, at the loss of some of the fresh funkiness that made their shows so much fun. The funk is still there, though, and Josh Clauson, the only original band member remaining, can still shred well enough to make his guitar sound like a keyboard one minute and a banshee the next. Rock might have edged the funk to the sidelines, but it’s still there, teeming up the sides.

Flowmotion is scheduled to play at 10 p.m. Sat., February 27 at the Sitzmark Bar and Grill (100 Olympic Cir., Girdwood). Tickets are $12-$15 and available at at the Sitzmark ticket office or 754-2275.
